COMPOSITION BOARD
Also euphemistically known as “press board” and “hard board” this is a man-made exterior siding board consisting of layers of various wood products and resin all pressed under thousands of pounds of pressure. Due to its propensity to absorb water, especially along the bottom of the board “drip edges” almost all of this type of siding manufactured after the 70s will have a tendency to swell, soften, mildew, rot and ultimately, disintegrate if left uncared for long enough. There have been national class action suits against many manufacturers, most notably in the southeast against Louisiana-Pacific and Georgia-Pacific, Masonite and Temple-Inland. The American Hard Board Association recommends applying hand-applied coatings of paint or double sprayed layers every five years to
provide adequate protection.
